Mechanism for protecting Georgia’s territorial waters discussed in parliament
The current situation in the territorial waters of Georgia`s breakaway region of Abkhazia was discussed in parliament on Wednesday. A joint session of the committee for foreign relations and the provisionary parliamentary commission for territorial reintegration was held. The MPs said, international mechanism for protecting Georgia`s territorial waters should be drawn up. The Georgian Foreign Ministry partly confirms the previously released information about reinforcement of the Russian military forces in Georgia`s territorial waters. The Deputy Foreign Minister said, the situation is being examined now.Nino Kalandadze said, the Foreign Ministry together with the Justice Ministry has prepared an international legal document describing how boats enter Abkhazia, passing by the Georgian government. The document gives legal assessment of the mentioned facts and describes the ways, how similar incidents may be averted. Ms. Kalandadze also said, an adequate diplomatic circular has also been prepared that will be sent to the diplomatic corps and the international organizations.
It was also said at the joint session of the parliamentary committees, that Moscow, being unable to recognize Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia at the international level, is trying to legitimatize the separatist structures at the level of the international non-governmental organizations.
Members of the transport administration were also summoned up to the parliament on Wednesday. They said, also the separatists are still threatening, passenger and cargo ships continue to ply Georgia`s territorial waters.
