MFA assesses Juri Luzhkov’s visit to Tskhinvali as go on Russian MFA policy
MFA assesses the visit of Moscow mayor Juri Luzhkov’s visit to Tskhinvali as Russain foreign policy continuation. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Jalaghania made statement at today’s press conference. ‘That is usual move characterizing Russian policy on violation the International rules. The fact of opening the Moscow district in Tskhinvali is expression of another cynicism’, – stated David Jalaghania. Deputy Minister commented the Kokoity’s statement about integrating North Ossetia and South Ossetia and such to become the co-partner of Russia and Belarus. ‘Of course Kokoity made this statement in favour to Russain partners, but it should be said that he often gets mixed up in his own statements and takes inverse effect. So we don’t intend to comment such sort of ravings’, stated David Jalaghania.

Georgian Deputy Minister has downplayed the statement of the South Ossetian separatist leader Eduard Kokoity, who said South Ossetia planned to become an associated member of the Russian Federation. Kokoity wants to sign an agreement on specific ties with Russia in the future, however, the separatist leader defined that this agreement should stipulate that Tskhinvali region would remain an independent republic. Davit Jalaghania asserts Kokoity made this statement to balm his Russian patrons, but he is so confused in his words, that we do not think we should make comments on his similar statements and respond to his delirium every time,` Jalaghania said. The Deputy Minister has also commented on the intention of the Moscow Mayor to visit Tskhinvali region. `This is a step characteristic to Russian foreign policy, which as usual, contradicts international norms. The fact, that the Moscow mayor plans to open a district named Moscow in Tskhinvali, is the expression of Russian cynicism,` Jalaghania said.
Mikheil Saakashvili met with Ganmukhuri population and holidaymakers yesterday tonight. The President checked the constructions at the place and talked to the local population. He stated that the most talented and brave people live in Ganmukhuri. ‘We launched restoring works in Ganmukhuri but Russians came and burned everything. We discussed for a long time in Tbilisi the issue of permitting the holidaymakers to rest in Ganmukhuri and at last decided that the constructions should continue here due to the unique resort which is considered Ganmukhuri. Precipitation is twice less here compared to Achara and Abkhazia. We should never refuse from that resort’ ,-stated Saakashvili. The President and the holidaymakers came to the wall constructed by Russian and Abkhazian forces and stated that Russian darkness is beyond this wall. ‘You all see that within the wall is lightness and Georgian people run their lifestyle. Beyond the wall is darkness under Russian control. Who likes this darkness let him glance and see what happens there.’
On 26 August 2008 following the military aggression carried out against Georgia, occupation of the inalienable parts of the Georgian territory and ethnic cleansing conducted there and in gross violation of the universally recognized norms and principles of international law and the six-point ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008 Russia recognized the so-called ‘independence’ of the proxy regimes set up by itself. One year that ensued since then made it clear that these irresponsible actions have met with no support from the international community and Russia found itself in complete isolation. Despite this, the Kremlin’s regime is persistently pursuing its efforts designed to legalise the forceful redrawing of the borders of the sovereign state, military occupation and ethnic cleaning.
On 24 August 2009, S. Bagapsh, leader of the proxy regime set up on the Russian-occupied Georgian territories, in Abkhazia in particular, gave an interview to Russian newspaper Vremja Novostej voicing the proxy regime’s decision to transfer the right to operate the Abkhaz section of the Georgian railways to the Russian Open Joint Stock Company Russian Railways. If this illegal transaction becomes a reality, freight traffic along this section will only be fulfilled through the Russian Federation’s international codes. Acting behind the shield of the occupation troops deployed in the occupied areas of the Georgian territory, the Kremlin continues to rob Georgia of its own assets. With the goal of transporting the stolen resources (inert materials, rare species of timber, oil) Moscow now tries to seize the Abkhaz section of the Georgian railways. This and many other facts indicate clearly that the marauding is something that the Kremlin leaders elevate to the rank of state policy.
“Russia and Ukraine in Intensifying Standoff” – is the title of the article published in New York Times. The author of the article declares that a year after its war with Georgia, Russia is engaging in an increasingly hostile standoff with another pro-Western neighbor, Ukraine. Relations between the two countries are more troubled than at any time since the Soviet collapse, as both sides resort to provocations and recriminations, – is stated in New York Times. Journalist estimates as Russia provocation the Russia side’s accusation of Ukrainian soldiers and members of Ukrainian nationalist groups of fighting alongside Georgia’s military in the war last August. The paper reports that, the disagreement between Russia and Ukraine is on the Crimean Peninsula, home to a Russian naval base, where the tensions are perhaps most in danger of bursting into open conflict.
